Get ready to rent – your house hunting guide

Back

It may seem like a great idea to begin your search as early as October for the next academic year, but this can have its pitfalls!  Take the time to get to know your friends before you decide you want to live with them: Once a tenancy agreement is signed it's not normally possible to get out of it if you change your mind later in the year.

Student housing fairs

Not to be missed! Come along to one of our student housing fairs, find out what your options are in the city centre, and meet university approved landlords. University staff will be on hand to offer guidance too. Housing fairs are held towards the end of the first term each year (and sometimes again in the New Year).

Which accommodation is right for you?

City halls of residence

Halls give you the flexibility to book as an individual and share living areas with other students - or to book directly as a group. There is a wide choice of room types on offer, including standard, en-suite and studios. Most halls offer on-site secure cycle storage, laundry facilities, attractive communal spaces and management services to help you feel at home.

Houses, apartments, studios

When it comes to houses, flats and studios, the specification and cost varies considerably. You will usually share a bathroom (although some with en-suite bathrooms are available), kitchen and living space.  Some accommodation comes with outside space, such as gardens or patio areas. Many historic buildings have been converted for student use and maintain their original features and homely feel, whilst others are newly built and offer modern interiors.

Most houses and flats are shared by ready-made friendship groups, but many landlords are equally happy to take enquiries from individuals who are not yet part of a group, especially postgraduates. Smaller houses, flats and larger studios may be suitable for families and couples.
